Obituary for Mortimer D Gross

Gross M.D., Mortimer D.

Born in Newark on September 22, 1921, Mortimer David Gross died at home on July 23, 2016. His five older siblings were born in Europe: Lenore, Judith, Debby, Sam, and Moe. Survivors include his sons David and Jonathan, daughter-in-law Sally, grandchildren Emily (Duncan) Barton and Martha (Jordan) Cuffie, and countless nieces and nephews. He is mourned by many friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn (née Brabenec) and son-in-law Juan Campos.

Chemistry was his first career. He earned bachelor and master of science degrees in chemistry, and worked in synthetic rubber during World War II. Later, he changed careers to medicine. After medical school, internship and residency, he practiced psychiatry in Highland Park for over fifty years. Thousands of patients benefited from his care.

Family, education, travel, sailing, civic engagement and music occupied his time outside of the office. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Chicago Botanic Garden for the joy that the garden brought to the lives of Mort and Joie Gross.

A private funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 27. Family, friends and colleagues are invited to a visitation at the Gross residence on Thursday, July 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. Please contact Mitzvah Memorial Services at 630-MITZVAH for details.
