His passion, intellect and drive was inspiring, and we benefited greatly from his support, guidance, and encouragement in thinking about new ways to integrate vascular medicine information into more training courses. Perhaps best of all, we will treasure and remember his wit, laughter and joyful outlook on life and are grateful to have had the opportunity to know and learn from him. Condolence From: Seth Baum
Condolence: Alan's unexpected and terribly premature passing is a loss for many of us on a personal level. For those who did not know him though, the countless patients for whom he fiercely and passionately advocated, they have lost an amazing ally. Alan was brilliant, kind, welcoming, and warm. He brimmed with vitality. Alan genuinely tried to change the world. And he is one of the few who succeeded in that endeavor. He fought for every patient, teaching doctors to open our minds and hearts to all people. He will be deeply missed by me, and many many others who had the honor and privilege to know him. His death is devastating.

Condolence From: Kerry Stewart
Condolence: My sincere condolences to the Hirsch family. I first spoke to Alan in 2001 when he called me soon after I became the president of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. It was his mission to establish exercise rehabilitation for patients afflicted with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and was asking if I was interested in working with him. Though this most important clinical treatment was new to me at the time, within 5 minutes, his convincing and enthusiastic manner taught me how important it was to go forward with him. This phone call brought me into the PAD world. I witnessed first hand his leadership at so many levels, with individuals, professional health organizations, clinical practice guidelines writing committees, a public education foundation, and more, that transformed the treatment approach to PAD. Though many people have contributed to this field, it was Alan who was always the mover and shaker that brought a vision to reality. Whether in an official leadership position or not in the many organizations he served, he was always the voice that pushed all of us forward. He will be missed as a friend and colleague yet always remembered as someone who made a difference in the lives of patients.

Condolence: Alan, I am honored to have worked with you on your study of public awareness of peripheral arterial disease P.A.D. (you emphasized to me the importance of NOT saying 'pad' in our conversations and in the survey interviews - I got it!). Our paper was published and I am happy to have been helpful in your obtaining quality data. But...I am so sad that you have left us so soon, with so much left undone. You are already greatly missed by me and so many others. I trust you are passionately carrying on other good work wherever you are now. My sincere regards to your loving family and partner Sue.

Condolence From: Peter Wilson MD
Condolence: Dear Alan, I just heard that you departed on a trip and that you are not coming back. That is truly unfortunate. We have unfinished work! I have some ideas about research, physical activity, and cardiovascular health that I was hoping to discuss with you when we next got together. You and I always had something that we were planning. Unfortunately, that will not happen. You are the only friend I have ever had who with affection addressed me by my last name when you wanted to make a particular point. You would say, “Wilson, think of this, think of that, think out of the box.” I remember that I once reminded you that my first name was Peter and that the name “Wilson” most poignantly referred to a basketball that washed up on a desert island in a Tom Hanks movie and that object was not me. You replied, “No matter Wilson. You get the point.” Your advice was always sound and spoken with enthusiasm. To be honest, Alan, I will take a while for me, and many others, to realize that you are not coming back. We remember you fondly. Take care.
